Last weekend I did a short flight to freshen my night currency with a couple of full-stop landings. I also used the flight as an excuse for some holiday cheer. I've written before about a house in my neighborhood that goes ALL out for Christmas with blazing lights (see above link).
I rigged the GoPro and have a quick clip below. You can see me approaching a couple of shopping centers (center left of screen, with a glowing white dot towards the left bottom). At the very end of the clip, you can see the bright white patch in the lower leftmost corner of the screen--the entire front and back yards are aglow and you can make out the line of cars creeping along on the street in front of the house. I did a few circles around the house and then headed back to the airport. It doesn't stand out as significantly on the GoPro video due to the wide angle lens, but it really is impressive!
I made a couple of landings to a full stop and have one clip here to show you what it looks like. I was landing on Runway 29 and in a right-hand traffic pattern, so the first 30-seconds of the video is the downwind leg (out towards Long Island Sound) and the base leg is made out over the inky blackness of Long Island Sound before you turn onto the final approach leg and the lit-up runway. On the left side of the runway you can make out 4 balls of light situated horizontally---this is the PAPI (Precision Approach Path Indicator) and shows two white balls to the left and two red balls to the right. This tells me that I'm on the proper glidepath for landing. All white means you're too high; all read means you're too low. There's actually a little memory aid you learn as a student pilot:
White over White, you're high as a kite; Red over White, you're alright; Red over Red, you're dead.
On Monday, Gwaihir went in for his annual inspection (and a little upgrade), so I'll add details on that when I get the airplane back. I went by early this morning and snapped some photos of the plane in apparent undress--it's a little nerve-wracking seeing it all stripped!
